Comet Crow bowl and book
In a sacred dream Old Crow Woman and Comet circle the Sun.
Old Crow Woman studies the anatomy of a Comet. (Source: NASA)
Comets are dirty snowballs out in space that consist of ice, rock, and dust left over
from the formation of our solar system 4.6 billion years ago.
Old Crow Woman’s story.
Old Crow Woman embraces the ancient knowledge both she and Comet hold.
Crows are dark-feathered birds that, like Comets, consist of bits and pieces
left over from the creation of the solar system.

WATER
Five Element Theory asserts that the world changes according to the five agents’ generating or overcoming relationships.
WATER
Water nourishes Wood (flowers, plants, trees) and extinguishes Fire.
Water also rusts Metal and destabilizes Earth.
Water is represented by black, undulating lines, and the direction North.
Water is associated with Winter and a time of retreat, stillness, and coolness.

WOOD
Five Element Theory asserts that the world changes according to the five agents’ generating or overcoming relationships.
WOOD
Wood feeds Fire and depletes Water. Wood roots stabilize Earth. Wood depletes nutrients in Earth and dulls Metal (reverses metal cutting wood).
Wood is represented by green, rectangular shapes, and the direction East. Wood is associated with Spring, a period of growth and expansion which
generates abundant vitality, movement and wind.
10"x10" Shadow Box. Rag paper, wood, silk.

FIRE
Five Element Theory asserts that the world changes according
to the five agents’ generating or overcoming relationships.
FIRE
Fire creates and forms Earth (volcanoes, ash) and burns Wood (forest fires).
Fire also melts Metal (refines, shapes or affects its integrity)
and evaporates Water.
Fire is represented by red, angular shapes, and the direction South.
Fire is associated with Summer, a period of swelling, flowering, and expanded with heat.

EARTH
Five Element Theory asserts that the world changes according to
the five agents’ generating or overcoming relationships.
EARTH
Earth contains Metal and absorbs Water. Earth also smothers Fire and contains (or directs) Water (dams or riverbanks).
Earth obstructs Water (over-damming) and rots Wood (buried wood rots).
Earth is represented by yellow, square shapes, and the direction center.
Earth is seen as late Summer, and is associated with stability,
leveling and dampness.
Earth can be seen as a period of stillness
transitioning between the other seasons.

METAL
Five Element Theory asserts that the world changes according to
the five agents’ generating or overcoming relationships.
METAL
Metal carries Water (buckets, pipes) and penetrates wood (chopping, sawing, drilling).
Metal also collects Water (water vapor condenses on metal) and
impoverishes Earth (erosion, destructive mining of minerals), and de-energizes Fire (conducting heat away).
Metal is represented by the color white, circular shapes, and the direction West.
Metal is associated with Autumn, a period of harvesting,
transmuting, contracting, collecting and dryness.

Knothole, Wormhole
A knothole is a cavity in a living tree and marks where a branch used to be.
A wormhole is a tunnel with two ends that separate points in spacetime.
